THE FLOOR CONDITION BEFORE OUR INTERVENTION

Hospital helipads must meet specific technical requirements to ensure safe operations and compatibility with different types of helicopters. At Villa Scassi Hospital in Sampierdarena, Genoa, we refurbished the surface finish coating, which had deteriorated over the years due to use and weathering, causing some portions of the resin to partially detach from the structural concrete support.

THE SOLUTION

Resurfacing was essential as any helipad must always be highly performant. If the critical issue at the Villa Scassi P.O. had not been resolved, ENAC would have revoked its authorisation to use it. Therefore, in cases like this, a total resurfacing is necessary. As this is an outdoor area, a period of suitable weather conditions has been identified for applying the resin coating.

The image on the right shows the subgrade scarifying operations, which involved removing the 10 mm-thick coating to achieve a clean, rough concrete surface. The area was made ready for the resin coating by removing the rubble and dust.

After the application of epoxy primer, the application of CERTIFIED EPOSSIDIC TRANSPIRANT SPATULATED MALT SYSTEM, 7/8 mm thick, HIGH SOLID CONTENT consisting of quartz sand in grain size curve and high solid epoxy resin in 12:1 ratio was carried out.

We applied two layers of epoxy resin and a skim coat of RAL colour, as per the project, in compliance with current Enac regulations. In addition, for safety reasons, the finish was required to have non-skid characteristics and a slight trowel effect.

We then applied a finishing film of low-yellowing polyurethane resin by roller, with the signage also conforming to ENAC standards.

Our intervention included cutting the new contraction joints (where present in the substrate) and sealing them with specific elastomeric PU resin
